Mewis, Meehan Leads BC Past NU, 2-0
Senior Kristen Mewis scored her third game-winning goal of the season to lead No. 6 Boston College past Northeastern, 2-0, in a non-conference game at the Newton Soccer Field on Wednesday night. Boston College improved to 5-0-1, while Northeastern is now 1-4-0.
"All the credit goes to Northeastern. They had a great game plan and have excellent coaching,'' said BC Head Coach Alison Foley. "They never gave up and you have to give them a lot of credit.
"I thought our backs have been playing tremendous soccer for the last three games. We earned another shutout. It's tough to come off a west coast trip and play a local rival so I'm proud of our resilience.''
Boston College finally got on the scoreboard with 14 minutes to play in the match. Mewis found herself alone for the first time in the match and headed in a beautifully placed cross from Gibby Wagner. It was the sixth consecutive match which Mewis has recorded a goal or an assist this season.
BC freshman McKenzie Meehan would extend the lead to 2-0 in the 83rd minute of play. Meehan one-timed a cross from sophomore Stephanie McCaffrey into the near post by a diving Northeastern goalkeeper Paige Burnett (12 saves).
From the start BC dominated the play but the two teams played to a 0-0 half. BC held a 12-3 edge in shots, including six on goal.
Senior Victoria DiMartino led the team with five shots, including a great chance just 10 minutes into the match. DiMartino sent Mewis in on a great through ball into the box, but Mewis had a Northeastern defender hanging on her side and attempted a shot to the far post. Burnett stretched out to make a key save in the 36 minute of the match.
The second half Boston College continued to press forward but could not break through. In the 66th minute, freshman Jana Jeffrey had a clear shot from 27 yards out but Burnett corralled the hard right-footed shot. Mewis and McKenzie Meehan had chances in the box in the 72nd minute but the NU defense cleared the loose ball.
Mewis (five shots) finally broke the tie game on the header, securing BC its fifth win of the season.
Boston College out shot Northeastern, 22-4 and had 11 corner kicks to the Huskies one. BC's goalkeeper Alexa Gaul was active all night and made two saves. She earned her second shutout of the season.
