Milwaukee Drops Defensive Battle At Gonzaga
SPOKANE, Wash. - Ben White scored in the 55th minute and the defense held the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team out of the net the rest of the way as Gonzaga University posted a 1-0 victory Sunday afternoon at Luger Field.
"It was a very physical match and I thought the guys fought and battled very hard," Milwaukee head coach Kris Kelderman said. "It was a tough loss at 1-0 and the goal we gave up was a tough one. But, we move on and look forward to Oakland next week and get the season started for conference play."
The Panthers spent the final 35 minutes in search of an equalizer and had a handful of quality chances to do so. Freshman Tinashe Marowa had a good look in the 69th minute, set up on a great feed by sophomore Magnus Flaatedal. The Gonzaga keeper got enough of his close-range attempt to send it bouncing just outside of the right post.
Freshman Matthias Binder nearly snuck in a left-footed curler to the far post corner of the goal frame, narrowly missing again. Sophomore Nick Moon blasted a rocket over the crossbar in the 87th and a final chance just before the horn sounded by senior Declan Rodriguez went right of the target.
The stat sheet was nearly even as was indicative of the match played. Gonzaga led in shots, 9-8, with each team finishing with three corner kicks. Both goalies made one save and the Zags were whistled for 16 of the 28 fouls.
Up next, just one game will be on the schedule next week, but it will be a big one as the Panthers stay on the road to open conference play Sept. 19. They head to Rochester, Mich., to take on the defending Horizon League champions, the Oakland Golden Grizzlies.
