Mines Blanks Fourth Straight; Wins 2-0
No. 13 Mines Blanks Fourth Straight; Downs ThunderWolves 2-0
GOLDEN – NSCAA No. 13 Colorado School of Mines women's soccer recorded its fourth consecutive shutout Friday evening, cruising past Colorado State-Pueblo 2-0 in the RMAC-opener at CSM Soccer Stadium.
Mines (4-0-1, 1-0 RMAC) eclipsed 20 shots for the fourth game in a row, outshooting the ThunderWolves 26-4, including 18-0 in the first half, and 10-3 in shots on target.
Junior Kenzie King delivered the Orediggers' opening score and her first of the season at 18:44, heading in a point blank, straight-on look off a cross from senior Anna Evans near the right corner boundaries.
The one-nil advantage remained until the 76th minute when junior Rachael Turner ripped a Bree Archuleta feed to the upper, right-90 from over 30 yards out with 14:14 remaining, her second goal in 2013.
King led Mines with a game-high three of five tries on goal, while Evans and Turner each landed two shots on frame.
Riding a program-record 19-game unbeaten streak, the women have outscored their opponents 10-1 through five games this season and not allowed a score over the last 413:12 minutes. With shutouts in 10 of the past 12 matches, Mines has also not trailed in game since the first half against UC-Colorado Springs on Oct. 26, 2012 – a span of 1089:59 minutes.
Sophomore Jayln Yates swiped three ThunderWolve (3-2, 0-2 RMAC) shot attempts to improve to 4-0-1. Yates is four saves shy from tying Marissa Burson (104; 2005-06) for second on the school's career saves list and 11 blank sheets away from matching Briana Schulze (26; 2007-10) and the program record for shutouts.
Mines continues its season-long three-game home swing at 12 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22 against Colorado Christian (4-1, 1-0 RMAC).
