Men’s Soccer Rally Falls Short In 2-1 Loss At Regis
DENVER – A concerted second half comeback attempt went for naught Sunday afternoon as Colorado School of Mines men's soccer lost a physical 2-1 decision to Regis at the Regis Match Pitch in Denver.
The Orediggers (10-4-1, 8-4 RMAC) fell behind 1-0 3:09 into the match as Martin Maybin set up a score by Mark Kelly, and later went down two scores as the Regis duo, with the help up Arnthor Kristinsson, combined once again in the 28th minute.
Mines stirred the offensive intensity in the second 45:00, which helped generate a foul in the box at 75:36 that allowed senior Tesho Akindele to convert the subsequent penalty try.
Kept alive by a penalty kick stop by senior Colin Baker following a suspect foul with 1:08 remaining, the men continued to hurriedly search for the equalizer, placing three of their final four shots on frame. However, Ranger keeper Connor Adkisson denied each scoring chance on his way to a game-high 13 saves.
The teams finished even in shots at 23 apiece, while Mines held the advantage in on-goal looks, 14-6. Senior Baski Baker had a team-best three of five shots on target and Akindele, junior Jared Herselman and sophomore Richard Garvey each recorded two.
The RMAC leader in goals (14) and points (35), Akindele moved into a tie for 18th in the Division II record book with 71 career scores and 19th in points with 173.
Baker stopped four shots in net in the setback, falling to 10-4-1.
The Rangers (10-2-1, 9-2-1 RMAC) stayed in front in the conference standings with 28 points, while Mines dropped into a tie for third with Colorado Mesa (9-4-3, 7-2-3 RMAC) with 24 points. Metro State (10-3-3, 8-2-2 RMAC) is second with 26 points.
The Orediggers remain on the road for their final two matches, beginning at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1 against Fort Lewis in Durango.
