Men's Soccer Sweeps Season Series With ThunderWolves
PUEBLO – Braced by first half scores from seniors Tesho Akindele and Baski Baker, Colorado School of Mines men's soccer won its second straight away from home, completing the season sweep against Colorado State-Pueblo, 2-1, on Friday evening at the Rawlings Sports Complex.
Akindele provided the initial lead 6:42 into the match, directing a free kick to the upper, left corner for his RMAC-leading seventh score of 2013. Also the conference leader in points (18), Akindele began the week eighth in Division II in points and 16th in goals.
Under 16 minutes later at 22:26, Baker converted a pass to the top of the box from sophomore Chayce Moniz with the eventual deciding score, his fifth goal this season – all recorded in the last four contests.
A foul inside the 18-yarder and resulting successful penalty kick attempt by Colorado State-Pueblo's Jonny Sawyer with 11:37 remaining brought the match to its closing total.
Mines (6-1-1, 4-1-0 RMAC) finished with a 16-12 margin on shots and had five players place a shot on target, including Akindele, Baker, Moniz, senior Alex Gunberg and junior Tannor Randle.
Senior Colin Baker turned aside one of two shots in the 90 minutes, improving to 6-1-1 in net.
The men begin a three-game homestand at 2 p.m. Sunday against NSCAA No. 24 Metro State (5-1-3, 3-0-2 RMAC).
