Mines Twice Comes From Behind To Silence ThunderWolves
GOLDEN – Colorado School of Mines men's soccer twice rallied from a one-goal deficit Friday evening to take a hotly-contested 3-2 come-from-behind win over visiting Colorado State-Pueblo at CSM Soccer Stadium in Golden.
Following a 23-yard free kick score by Jack Gonzales in the 61st minute that left the ThunderWolves (2-7, 1-4 RMAC) in front 2-1, Mines countered with consecutive goals within a 3:50 span, including the eventual game-winner on a penalty kick conversion by freshman Nikolaus Grotz at 75:48.
Junior Richard Garvey put away the equalizer at 71:58, one-timing the point-blank rebound off a straight-on rip through traffic from Grotz at the penalty arc.
CSU-Pueblo struck the initial blow 2:52 into the match as Matt Marchenacarried a feed from Sam Glawe wide of the goalkeeper for a 15-yard look to center net.
The Orediggers first reached the scoring column in the 36th minute; freshman Jackson Shelledy launched a deep throw-in from the visitor's bench to redshirt freshman Ryan Blarr, who headed ahead the pass into the box, and before it touched down, junior Joe Haines connected on a half-volley from 16 yards to the right side.
Mines finished 14-8 on shots and 7-6 on shots on goal with Grotz, Garvey and Haines each sending two to net. Senior Matthew Alemann added one shot on frame.
Freshman Josh Clark improved to 2-0 in his second start in goal, swiping four shots in the 90:00 minutes.
The season sweep of the ThunderWolves moved Mines (6-3) into a tie with NSCAA No. 8 Regis for first in the RMAC standings at 5-1.
The men return to the road Sunday to face No. 12 Metro State at 2:30 p.m. at The Regency Athletic Complex in Denver.
