Minutemen Cool Off Saints
Josh Schwartz tallied six points and Mark Morris added two goals off the bench as UMass defeated Siena Soccer 5-2 in Amherst, Mass. Falko Friedrichs and James Beeston scored for the Saints.
Both teams had numerous chances throughout as the squads combined for 42 shots – 17 of which were on goal. But the Saints (4-3), which allowed just six goals total in their first six matches, surrendered five.
Morris and Schwartz struck five minutes apart early in the first half for UMass (1-8-1) which would not look back. Siena out-shot the Minutemen 15-7 in the first half and salvaged the stanza with a Friedrichs strike from Peter Gadze in the 43rd minute.
The teams traded goals early in the second half, with Beeston pulling the Saints back to within 3-2 in the 65th minute. Beeston finished Edmundo Briones’ rebound to give him 13 points for the season and 44 for his career, moving him into a three-way tie for eighth all-time in scoring in program history.
But Morris answered minutes later and Connor Devino added an insurance tally in the waning minutes to give UMass its first win of the season.
The Saints close out non-conference action next Saturday at noon against 2012 NCAA College Cup Sweet 16 participant Fairleigh Dickinson. Kickoff is at noon at Siena Turf Field.
