Missouri rallies, defeats Griz in double OT
September 12, 2014
The Montana soccer team carried a 3-1 lead deep into the second half at Missouri Friday night, but the Tigers scored twice in the final 14 minutes of regulation to tie it and again midway through the second overtime to top the Grizzlies 4-3 at Columbia, Mo.
Senior Chloe Torres put Montana (3-4-0) up 1-0 in the fifth minute, and goals by senior Tyler Adair and freshman Allie Lucas less than two minutes apart midway through the second half gave the Grizzlies a 3-1 lead.
The Tigers (4-1-2), who received votes in this week’s NSCAA top 25 poll, started their comeback with a goal in the 76th minute, and a successful penalty kick in the 81st minute evened the score.
Taylor Grant scored her fifth goal of the season 4:35 into the second overtime to help Missouri remain unbeaten in its last five matches.
“This is a game we should have won. We were in a position to beat a good SEC team on its home field, and if I had been a better coach, we would have won,” said UM coach Mark Plakorus. “The kids did nothing wrong in this game. It’s my fault, and that’s what bothers me.
“After we went up 3-1, Missouri started throwing numbers forward to basically attack with eight players. I should have adjusted our back line quicker and put numbers in to deal with it. I was too slow to react, and by the time we got things set, they had tied the game.”
When the sting of the loss eases, Montana will be able to look back and appreciate how it put itself in that position in the first place.
Torres scored her second goal of the season off a corner kick by freshman Hallie Widner. In the second half Adair and Lucas both scored their first goals of the season. Adair’s was assisted by junior Mackenzie Akins, Lucas’s by Widner, who now has a goal and two assists in Montana’s last three matches.
The Grizzlies, who scored three goals for the second time in three matches, took 15 shots and put a season-high nine on goal. Seven different players put shots on frame.
“For us to play at this high a level on our fourth straight weekend on the road, I just couldn’t be more proud of this team and how we played,” said Plakorus.
“We moved the ball extremely well and created some great opportunities. The goals we scored were fantastic. We were dangerous all night long. I thought we gave them all they could handle.”
Sophomore goalkeeper Kailey Norman faced a season-high 27 shots, 15 of which were on goal. Her 11 saves were a career high.
After four weekends on the road to open the season, the Grizzlies will make their home debut next weekend when they host the Montana Invitational.
The Grizzlies will host Colorado State on Friday at 4 p.m. and Hawaii on Sunday at 1 p.m. Eastern Washington is the tournament’s fourth team.
