MONMOUTH FALLS 3-2 IN OVERTIME AT LAFAYETTE
EASTON, PA - Monmouth rallied from a two-goal deficit to send the match to overtime behind scores from Erica Murphy (Millstone Township, NJ/Pennington Prep) and Rachelle Ross (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape), but Lafayette benefitted from a counter-attack off a Hawks' corner kick to secure a 3-2 victory in overtime at Oaks Stadium on Thursday night.
Trailing 2-0 in the first stanza, the Hawks cut the lead in half in the 44th minute when Murphy nodded in a Monique Goncalves (Warren, NJ/Watchung Regional) corner kick service for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Monmouth knotted the match in the 71st minute when a long ball was fed to Alexis McTamney (Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown Regional), who slipped a pass to a streaking Ross for her second tally of the year.
Following a 75 minute lightning delay, the Leopards, off to their best start since 2011, grabbed a 2-0 lead behind goals in the 34th and 39th minutes.
Lafayette used a counter attack off a Monmouth corner kick in the overtime session to spring Annika Sheehan in the 95th minute for the game-winner.
"We did not play to our potential tonight and credit to Lafayette for getting the result," stated head coach Krissy Turner."
Monmouth, which played its third game in less than a week, falls to 4-1 on the season.
The Hawks and Leopards each got off 13 shots in the match, while Monmouth held a 7-3 edge in corner kick opportunities.
Junior Sydney Lavan (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) made four saves for the Hawks.
Monmouth returns to action on Monday, September 7, when the Hawks host Seton Hall on Hesse Field at 7:00 p.m., on ESPN3, when the program hosts "Christie Rampone Night" in honor of the United States Women's National Team Captain, and World Cup Champion.
