MONMOUTH FALLS TO #24 PENN ST. 3-0 IN NCAAs

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - The Monmouth University women's soccer team's 2013 season came to a close behind a 3-0 loss to No. 24 Penn State in the NCAA First Round on Friday night at Jeffrey Field.
Monmouth, which tied a school-record with 17 wins on the year, and set a new program-record with 16 shutouts, got a career-high nine saves from senior goalkeeper Ashley Lewis (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Boro) in the road loss.
"We played the best we could against a great opponent," stated head coach Krissy Turner. "We created some excellent chances and were not able to convert. I am very proud of my team and how they represented Monmouth on the national stage."
Penn State, which outshot the Hawks 25-11 in the match, and generated 10 corner kicks, got on the board in the sixth minute when Tani Costa put away a cross from Mallory Weber.
Costa netted her second goal of the match and 10th of the season six minutes into the second half, off helpers from Taylor Schram and Maya Hayes, while Whitney Church's header off a corner kick in the 67th minute gave the Nittany Lions a 3-0 lead.
Senior Dana Costello (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial), who ends her career as the eighth-leading scorer in program history (82 points), put four shots on goal for MU, while freshman Alexis McTamney (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) added a pair on frame.
Monmouth, which was shutout for just the second time this season, last surrendered three goals in a game on October 21, 2012.
Britt Eckerstrom made six saves for Penn State.
