MONMOUTH FALLS TO CENTRAL CONNECTICUT, 1-0
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Central Connecticut’s Eddy Bogle headed in a Keir Hannity cross in the 7th minute as the Blue Devils defeated the Monmouth University men’s soccer team, 1-0, Saturday night on The Great Lawn. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 1-5-2, while the Blue Devils are now 3-4-1.
In the 7th minute, Hannity lofted a ball from sideline into the box to find Bogle, who rose up just higher than his defender to redirect the ball into the net for what proved to be the game winner.
The Hawks created several quality scoring chances, finishing with a 13-4 advantage in shots and a 10-2 edge in corner kicks. Matt Jeffery (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) got on the end of a pair of crosses off set pieces in the first half, but both headers sailed over the crossbar. Joseph Schmid (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) also got a shot off inside the box in the 36th minute, but it also sailed high.
Freshman goalkeeper Eric Klenofsky (Lincoln Park, N.J./DePaul Catholic) started the second half in net and was tested quickly. He was equal to the task, stopping both shots he faced early in the period. In the 60th minute, Tomas Penfold (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) fired off a shot from inside the box, but it went wide.
Perhaps the Hawks’ best chance came in the 74th minute, when Francois “Paco” Navarro (Paris, France) lined up a free kick from 20 yards directly in front of the net. Navarro put the shot on target, but CCSU goalkeeper Josef Abele was equal to the task, pushing the shot over the crossbar.
The Hawks return to action next Saturday, Oct. 5, when they travel to Fairfield for their first-ever Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) contest. Kickoff from Lessing Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
