MONMOUTH PLAYS TO 1-1 2OT DRAW AT IONA
October 9, 2013
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Behind senior Monique Plescia's (Norwood, N.J./Northern Valley Regional-Old Tappan) fifth goal of the season, the Monmouth University women's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw at Iona in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action on Wednesday afternoon. The Hawks, now 10-1-1 overall, stand at 4-0-1 in the league, while the Gaels improve to 3-0-2 in MAAC play.
The Hawks broke into the scoring column in the 7th minute when Plescia corralled a loose ball in the box and notched her fifth goal of the year. On the play, classmate Dana Costello (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) fired a shot on frame that was stopped by Iona goalkeeper Trista Rivera, but Plescia settled the rebound, beat a defender and scored for the Blue & White.
Iona tied the game in the 87th minute of play as Kara Maguire netted a score off a feed from Alex Chinich.
"We did not play to our ability level today and then we got frustrated," stated head coach Krissy Turner. "We had many chances to score and failed to convert them, but overall we could have executed better."
Monmouth outshot Iona 22-7 in the match, including an 11-2 edge in the second half and 4-1 advantage in the overtime sessions. Rivera made 12 saves for the Gaels, while fifth-year senior Ashley Lewis (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Boro) made three stops for the Hawks.
Monmouth returns to action on Saturday, October 12, when the Hawks travel to Siena for a 1:00 p.m. MAAC match with the Saints.
