MONMOUTH TIES ALBANY, 1-1
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Freshman forward Dave Nigro (Marlboro, N.J./Marlboro) scored his first career goal as the Monmouth University men’s soccer team tied Albany, 1-1, Friday night on The Great Lawn. With the tie, the Hawks move to 1-3-2, while the Great Danes are now 1-4-2.
“I’m certainly disappointed that we didn’t get the win tonight,” said Monmouth Head Coach Robert McCourt. “However, I think there are a lot of positives that we can build from. We created a bunch of chances. The finishing of the chances is something that we’ll continue to build as a team. We certainly had some great moments of possession and good, attacking soccer. So hopefully the final stages of finishing teams off will come as we get closer to conference play.”
The Hawks controlled possession in the first half, but couldn’t find the back of the net. Monmouth broke through with the go-ahead goal in the 73rd minute when Nigro collected the ball near the top of the 18-yard box and shot past Albany goalkeeper Tim Allen inside the left post.
In the 87th minute, Albany countered with the equalizer from Philip Persson. Kit Alexieff sent a cross from the sideline into the box, where Persson sent a header in underneath the crossbar.
Monmouth controlled the action in both overtimes, outshooting the Great Danes, 7-0, but couldn’t get the golden goal past Allen. For the game, Monmouth took an 18-7 edge in shots and a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Hawks return to action Sunday, when they travel to Hempstead, N.Y., to take on Hofstra. Kickoff from Hofstra Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
