WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Monmouth University women's soccer team improved to 2-0 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action, and 8-1 overall, behind its 2-1 victory over Canisius on The Great Lawn on Saturday afternoon. In the home win, freshman forward Alexis McTamney (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) added the game-winner and an assist for the Hawks.

 

"We created a lot of great chances today," stated Krissy Turner, who has guided the Hawks to their best start in her 16th season as the head coach. "It is good to be 2-0 in league play, but we need to execute better in front of the goal."

 

Monmouth outshot Canisius 29-4 in the match, forcing Golden Griffin goalkeeper Megan Tock to make 10 saves.

 

The Hawks opened the scoring in the 17th minute when McTamney fed senior Monique Plescia (Norwood, N.J./Northern Valley Regional-Old Tappan) for her second tally of the season.

 

Following a defensive breakdown, Canisius knotted the score at 1-1 in the 28th minute, as Brianna Smith netted her team-best seventh goal for the Golden Griffins (3-8-1, 1-2-0 MAAC).

 

Monmouth retook the lead just 1:23 into the second half when junior Alexa Freguletti (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) crossed a ball on the ground into the box that McTamney finished with one touch, for her team-high sixth goal of the season.

 

Fifth-year senior Ashley Lewis (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Boro) made one save in goal for the Hawks, who also held an 8-3 edge in corner kick opportunities.

 

Monmouth, now 5-0 at home this season, returns to action on Wednesday night, when the Hawks host Manhattan in MAAC play on The Great Lawn at 7:00 p.m.
