MONMOUTH TOPS FAIRFIELD 2-0
October 5, 2013
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Monmouth University women's soccer team remained unbeaten in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action on Saturday night behind a 2-0 victory over Fairfield University on The Great Lawn. The Hawks, now 4-0 in MAAC play, improved to 10-1 overall behind goals from freshman Alexis McTamney (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) and junior Alexa Freguletti (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah).
"Tonigh was a terrific team win," said head coach Krissy Turner. "Defensively, we were able to minimize Fairfield's opportunities, which allowed us to secure our eighth shutout."
The Hawks got on the scoreboard in the 28th minute when freshman Julie Spracklin (Eastampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) sent a long pass to a streaking McTamney down the left side of the field. McTamney, who beat two defenders with the dribble, fired a low-liner into the far corner for the 1-0 lead. McTamney, who increased her team-leading totals in goals to eight and points to 21, registered her fourth game-winner of the year.
Fairfield (6-5-1, 2-1-1 MAAC) nearly knotted the match at 1-1 with 12 minutes remaining in the half as a Stag headed a corner kick service on frame, but it was nodded away by sophomore back Monique Goncalves (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) off the line.
The Blue & White doubled the score in the 56th minute when senior Dana Costello (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) was taken down in the box and Monmouth was awarded a penalty kick, which Freguletti deposited into the bottom left corner.
Monmouth outshot Fairfield 9-7 in the match, forcing Kathleen Early to make two saves, while fifth-year senior Ashley Lewis (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Boro) made three saves en route to her seventh shutout of the season and the eighth for the side.
The Hawks, now 7-0 at home this season, have won five straight matches, outscoring their opponents 12-1, with four shutouts over that stretch.
Monmouth returns to action on Wednesday, October 9, when the Hawks travel to Iona College for a MAAC contest at 3:00 p.m.
