MONMOUTH WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS 2-1 IN DOUBLE OT AT NAVY
ANNAPOLIS, MD. - Despite Kim Clemmer's (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) first career goal, which knotted the match at 1-1 in the 90th minute, the Monmouth University women's soccer team fell in double overtime, 2-1, at Navy on Monday night at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
"We played a good game and I thought deserved a better fate in the end," stated head coach Krissy Turner. "Credit to Navy for getting the goal in overtime. We are playing well and are ready for conference play to start."
Trailing 1-0 late in the contest, freshman goalkeeper Jocelyn McCoy (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) lifted a free kick towards the Navy net, which was nodded in by Clemmer for her first career marker, and McCoy's first career assist. McCoy became Monmouth's second goalkeeper in the last two seasons to record a point, as Lia Fierro recorded a pair of assists in 2010.
Navy connected on the game-winner in the 104th minute, just 3:06 into the second extra session, when Caprice Kelty notched her second score of the evening. Kelty gave the Midshipmen a 1-0 edge in the 69th minute off a Monmouth turnover.
Navy held an 18-14 edge in shot attempts, forcing McCoy to make six saves in her first career start. Navy's Alexes Lopez-Shaw made seven saves for the Academy, which also held a 6-4 edge in corner kick opportunities.
In the match, sophomore Dana Costello (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) attempted a game-high seven shots, five of which were on frame.
Monmouth, which last lost suffered a double overtime loss a year ago to the day with a 1-0 defeat by Towson, defeated Navy 1-0 in overtime in the last meeting, in 2009.
Monmouth returns to action on Sunday, September 25 when the Hawks open Northeast Conference play at Bryant University, at 1:00 p.m.
