Mount Falls to Bucknell, 2-0
Emmitsburg, Md. (Aug. 25, 2013) – The Mount women's soccer team could not overcome Bucknell goals in both halves as the Mountaineers were handed a 2-0 defeat by the visiting Bison in Sunday's home opener at Waldron Family Stadium. Junior Alicia Mirando led the Mount's offensive attack with four shots on the day.
The Mount (1-1) was outshot by the Bison (2-0) by a 15-13 margin as the visitors made the most of their opportunities with both goals coming off of corner kicks. Liz Dwornik scored from 24 yards out after settling Mount's clear attempt on Bucknell's corner kick in the 35th minute, and Cora Climo drove a corner kick that Evelyn Nicinski headed in for the Bison's second goal in the 57th minute.
The Mountaineers put pressure on Bucknell's defense early in the contest with two corner kicks in the first 20 minutes but were not able to convert.
The best scoring chance for the Mount in the first half came when Mirando stole the ball from a Bucknell defender and looked to attack. The junior fired a cross on the ground to senior Jackie Corley, whose shot from just inside 18 yards went wide left with 15 minutes to play in the opening half.
Five minutes later, the Bison were able to break the 0-0 tie on Dwornik's shot that sailed just out of the reach of Mount goalkeeper Rachel Bourne's fingertips and into the net for a 1-0 advantage. Bourne made five saves in the opening 45 minutes, while fellow sophomore Vicky Cocozza stopped one shot in the second half.
Bucknell's lead grew to 2-0 on Nicinski's header 11:17 into the second half.
The Mount looked as though it had cut into the Bison's lead with 11:48 remaining in the game when Corley sent a through ball to Julia DiGiacomo running down the line. DiGiacomo's left-footed attempt rang off the right post and rolled back to Bucknell goalkeeper Jessie Ashworth, who had made a diving attempt to make the initial save.
Ashworth turned away four shots on the day to keep the Mount off the scoreboard.
The Mount will look to return to the win column with a 7 p.m. matchup with Temple on Thursday, Aug. 29, at Waldron Family Stadium.
