Mount Loses to UMBC in Battle of Baltimore
Baltimore, Md. (September 12, 2014) -- Competing in the first game of the first-ever Battle of Baltimore, the Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team fell by a 6-0 margin to UMBC at Ridley Athletic Complex on the campus of Loyola on Friday evening.
The Mount (0-8) was never able to catch up after falling behind on a UMBC (5-1) goal in the 11th minute. The Retrievers netted three goals in both halves to earn the victory. Lilly Rydon paced the UMBC offense with two goals and one assist, while Nicole Vallely registered a team-best two shots for the Mountaineers.
After Rydon got the Retrievers on the board with a header 11 minutes in, the Mount nearly found the equalizer when Vallely stepped up from her center back position and fired a shot from 25 yards out that whistled just over the crossbar with 15 minutes left before halftime.
UMBC scored two more times in the first half on a shot off the foot of Nikki Boretti in the 36th minute followed by a header from Jessy Brown with 1:13 left in the half.
Vallely fired another shot from long distance with just under four minutes remaining in the opening half, but UMBC goalkeeper Jen Nance was able to make the save to keep the Mount off the board.
UMBC secured three more goals in the second half courtesy of Amanda Dailey, Destinee Morris and another from Rydon.
Mount goalkeepers Rachel Bourne and Vicky Cocozza made four saves apiece, while Nance recorded two saves in 73:34 of action with Annette Cappellino finishing out the final 16:26 of the game for the Retrievers.
To conclude the Battle of Baltimore, the Mount heads to Towson on Sunday, Sept. 14, to take on Loyola at noon.
