Mount Scores First but Falls to Rider
Lawrenceville, N.J. (September 6, 2013) – The Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team scored in the sixth minute of Friday's game at Rider, but the Broncs responded by scoring the next four goals to hand the Mount a 4-1 defeat.
Senior Jackie Corley scored her first goal of the season on a breakaway off an assist by Keriann McGettigan 5:06 into the game. The Mount (1-4) held its lead for just over five minutes, however, as the Broncs (2-2) scored at the 10:45 mark on a strike off the foot of Hollie Kelsh.
In the 26th minute, Rider took a 2-1 lead thanks to the first of Jennifer Meier's two goals on the day when she slipped a shot past Mount goalkeeper Vicky Cocozza on a 1-on-1 opportunity. The rest of the half remained scoreless for both sides.
The Broncs' advantage grew to 3-1 on Meier's second goal on the afternoon in the 58th minute before Rider put the game out of reach on Bridgette Bartkowski's header from Kelsh's cross with just over 15 minutes remaining in the contest.
The Mount took three shots in the final 15 minutes with two from Sam Manson and one fromBrinley Watts, but one of Manson's strikes was saved, and the other two shots were off target.
Between the pipes, Cocozza was credited with five saves in the opening 45 minutes. In the second half, Rachel Bourne picked up four saves for the Mount. The Broncs also used two goalkeepers with Vanessa Perdomo turning away three shots and Bethany-May Howard making one stop.
The Mount was outshot by a 24-13 margin with five shots on goal to the Broncs' 13. Manson led the Mountaineers with three shots, while Meier recorded eight shots for the home side.
The Mount returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 8, with a game against Penn in Philadelphia, Pa. at noon.
