Mount Women’s Soccer Stopped by Bucknell
Lewisburg, Pa. (September 9, 2014) – Despite junior Emma Blair's first-half goal, the Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team suffered a 7-1 road loss at the hands of Bucknell on Tuesday night at Holmes Stadium.
For Blair, it was her third career goal and first of the season for the Mount (0-7), which registered a season-best 10 shots on the evening. Bucknell (3-3) capitalized on scoring opportunities with four goals in the opening 45 minutes and three more in the closing half. Kendall Ham paced the balanced Bucknell attack with two goals and one assist.
After falling behind on Danielle Piccirilli's goal in the fourth minute, Blair found the equalizer for the Mount to notch the game at 1-1 in the seventh minute. To build up to the scoring opportunity, freshman Kristen Morawski settled the ball just inside the offensive half and chipped in a pass over the Bucknell defense to Blair, who was making a run from the midfield. Blair was able to redirect the bouncing ball past Bucknell goalkeeper Jessie Ashworth, who charged off her line to cut down Blair's angle.
The score remained tied until the 19th minute when Bucknell's Brigit Falcon sent in a corner kick that deflected off a Mount defender and into the goal. The Bison managed two more goals before the halftime whistle for a 4-1 advantage on shots off the foot of Ham in the 42nd minute and Alex Gannon in the 45th.
Bucknell tallied three more goals in the second half to pull away from the Mount.
Blair and senior Alicia Mirando tied for the team lead with three shots apiece for the Mount, while Evelyn Nicinski led the home side with five shots. Bucknell used three goalkeepers with Ashworth seeing a majority of the action to earn the win. For the Mount, Vicky Cocozza and Rachel Bourneboth posted season-highs for saves with nine and seven, respectively.
The Mount will be back in action for the Battle of Baltimore with two games versus local rivals. On Friday, Sept. 12, the Mount battles UMBC at Loyola at 5 p.m. and will take on Loyola at Towson on Sunday, Sept. 14, at noon.
