Mount Women's Soccer Tripped up by FDU, 3-0
Emmitsburg, Md. (October 3, 2014) – The Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team produced a number of scoring opportunities but was never able to capitalize in a 3-0 home loss to Fairleigh Dickinson at Waldron Family Stadium on Friday night's Northeast Conference opener.
The Mount (1-11, 0-1 NEC) was awarded two penalty kicks in the second half, but FDU goalkeeper Felicia Burr was up to the challenge on both occasions to maintain the shutout for the Knights (8-3, 1-0 NEC).
Offensively, Emma Blair put all of her team-high three shots on target for the home side, while FDU scored goals from Katie Arathoon in the 10th minute, Rachel Hoekstra's strike in the 30th minute and Kasey Schiavoni's 63rd minute penalty kick.
The Knights, which held a 16-8 advantage on shots, put pressure on the Mount's backline during the early going with two shots and a corner kick in the opening nine minutes. FDU got on the board when Esther Rochon laid a ball into the penalty box that Arathoon redirected off a Mount defender and into the back of the net in the 10th minute.
The lead stretched to 2-0 when FDU's Carly Tice floated a cross to the back post where Hoekstra was able to finish the goal from six yards out in the 30th minute.
In the second half, Burr turned away Mount penalty kicks in the 53rd and 74th minutes. On the other end, Schiavoni put the game out of reach by converting her penalty kick in the 63rd minute.
The Mountaineers managed four shots in the final 20 minutes, but were never able to break through for a goal.
Between the pipes, Rachel Bourne played all 90 minutes, making four saves on the night for the Mount. For FDU, Burr registered four saves in 85:22 of action before Ashli Weems preserved the shutout with one save over the final 4:38.
The Mount will look to bounce back with a pair of games in New York next week. The Mountaineers square off with Wagner on Friday, Oct. 10, before taking on LIU Brooklyn on Sunday, Oct. 12.
