October 26, 2013
HAMDEN, CONN. - The Monmouth University women's soccer team ended its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) regular season with a 0-0 double overtime draw at Quinnipiac on Saturday afternoon, while claiming the league's outright regular season championship with a mark of 8-0-2. The Hawks, unbeaten in their last 11 matches, move to 14-1-2 overall on the season, their best start in program history.
In the victory, the Hawks posted the team's 13th shutout on the year, as junior goalkeeper Jocelyn McCoy (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding), in her second straight start, made one stop in net for tthe Blue & White for her second consecutive clean sheet.
"To win the regular season title in our first year in the MAAC is a terrific accomplishment," stated head coach Krissy Turner, who has now guided the Hawks to three conference regular season championships. "In addition, to finish the regular season with 13 shutouts is fantastic."
Monmouth, shutout for the first time this season, outshot the Bobcats 12-3 in the match, forcing Quinnipiac goalkeeper Natalia Grodzki to make four saves. The Hawks also held an 8-3 edge in corner kick opportunities.
Turner added, "We are excited to be headed to Disney for this year's conference tournament. We look forward to the challenge of playing our best soccer of the year on the road as that is what it will take to be successful."
Monmouth returns to action on Friday, November 1, when the Hawks face the #8/#9 seed winner in the MAAC Women's Soccer Championship Quarterfinals at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla.
