MU evens season record, tops Trine
ANGOLA, IND. – Manchester University wrapped up a season-opening three-match road trip in style Tuesday, Sept. 3.
The Spartans, improving to 1-1-1 on the season, out-shot in-state non-conference rival and host Trine University 11-5 and received a pair of goals from junior forward Katelyn Barta (Griffith, Ind.) en route to a 2-1 win at Weaver Field.
Barta broke up a scoreless tie in the 28th minute, taking a pass on the right side of the box from freshman defender Emily Anderson (Ann Arbor, Mich.) which she headed past Thunder goalkeeper Jamie Schnarr. The home side struck one of their two shot on goal attempts into the back of MU’s net in the 40th minute for a 1-1 tie, but the Spartans responded in the 63rd minute. A well-placed corner kick off the foot of junior midfielder Amber Oster (Waterloo, Ind.) found Barta on the right side of box which she, in turn, headed past Schnarr for the eventual game-winner.
Senior midfielder Allison Harper (Granger, Ind.) topped the MU shot chart. She fired off five attempts with three of them being on goal.
Manchester University opens a stretch of playing four of its next five matches on its home pitch at Spartan Field Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 7 and 8. MU co-hosts the annual Raven-Spartan Classic with Anderson University, taking on Kentucky Christian University at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, as part of a doubleheader with the Spartan men’s team, and faces Ohio Athletic Conference member Muskingum University Sunday at 1 p.m.
NOTES: Barta’s multiple-goal effort was the second of her career. Her first occurred last September at home against Andrews University. … The victory was the fifth in the last seven meetings for the Spartans against Trine. It also ended a two-match win string in the series for the Thunder.
