MU RALLIES FOR 2-1 OVERTIME WIN AT MANHATTAN
October 8, 2014
RIVERDALE, N.Y. - With 36 seconds remaining in the first overtime session, Monmouth University sophomore forward Erica Murphy (Millstone Township, N.J./Pennington Prep) nodded in the game-winning goal off a cross from classmate Julie Spracklin (Eastampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) to lift the Hawks to a 2-1 comeback victory at Manhattan College in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play on Wednesday night.
The Hawks, now 9-4 overall and 4-1 in the MAAC, got the decisive score when Spracklin crossed a ball from the endline that Murphy flicked on frame, by Manhattan goalkeeper Kristen Skonieczny, for the forward's third career game-winning tally.
Monmouth, which fell behind 1-0 at the 30:00 mark of the first half, responded with a headed in goal from senior back Alexa Freguletti (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) in the 63rd minute off an assist from Spracklin as well.
"We created numerous chances tonight," stated head coach Krissy Turner. "It was a character builder for us to be down a goal and to get the win on the road."
Monmouth unleashed a season-high 32 shots, to Manhattan's seven, forcing Skonieczny to make 12 saves for the Jaspers. Graduate student Nicole D'Agostino (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Hinsdale Central/Pitt) made three saves in net for the Hawks.
The Hawks also held a 10-3 edge in corner kick opportunities.
Monmouth returns to action on Saturday, October 11, when the Hawks travel to Fairfield University for a conference match with the Stags at 7:00 p.m.
