Mustangs drop 2-0 decision at ACU
ABILENE, Texas -- Abilene Christian snapped Midwestern State's season best three-match winning streak by claiming a 2-0 victory in the regular season finale Friday afternoon at the Wildcat Soccer Pitch.
ACU junior forward Andrea Carpenter notched her fifth goal of the season in the 31st minute while Stephanie Heron tallied her first goal of the season when she redirected a combination of passes from Carpenter and Krysta Grimm in the 58th minute.
"It was a good game and we played very well in the first half," MSU coach Jeff Trimble said. "We worked hard and had some good chances and just didn't finish them. They had their chance in the first half and scored. We just play well in the second half, but I'm proud of the girls' effort today."
Midwestern placed one of eight shots on goal finishing the regular campaign with an overall mark of 6-9-3 including a 6-5-3 showing in Lone Star Conference play, while Abilene Christian finishes at 8-9-1 and 6-7-1.
The teams will meet again in the opening round of the LSC Postseason Tournament Thursday afternoon in Canyon with a 2:30 p.m. kickoff time at The Pitch in Canyon which will follow the other opening round matchup between Angelo State and Texas Woman's University at noon.
"We look forward to going to Canyon," Trimble said. "I feel like we play well up there and we're getting to play the best. We get a hot ACU team in the first round and the host school in the semis. We'll be tested, but we're healthy and everyone has got a good amount of experience this year. We'll see how it goes."
West Texas A&M clinched the hosting bid claiming a 1-0 win over Eastern New Mexico Friday while Incarnate Word, which held the tiebreaker, was upset by Angelo State 1-0 in San Antonio.
Both teams receive a bye into the semifinal as WT will face the winner of the MSU/ACU match at 7:30 p.m. on Friday while Incarnate Word takes on the ASU/TWU victory at 5 p.m.
The LSC Postseason Tournament title game is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
