DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men's soccer team fell 1-0 to UMKC in the final match of the Jason's Deli SMU Invitational at Westcott Field on Sunday evening. With the victory, the Kangaroos improved to 1-2-2 on the season, while the Mustangs fell to 1-5.
Despite an 11-4 advantage in shots for the Mustangs in the opening frame, UMKC made the most of the opportunities it had. Junior Tato Chiaparro took advantage of a misplayed ball in SMU's defensive end and put away the match winner in the 30th minute.
The final shot tally went to the Mustangs, 19-7. Sophomore Alfred Koroma led SMU with seven shots, four of which were on goal. Senior Juan Castillo registered three shots, and sophomore Michael King added two. SMU also had the 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Senior Jaime Ibarra finished the match with a pair of saves.
Both King and Castillo were named to the all-tournament team.
The Mustangs are back in action on Friday when they travel to Rutgers for their first American Athletic Conference match. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. CT. Check SMUMustangs.com for ways to follow.
