Nevada Falls to No. 12 San Diego State in MW
The University of Nevada soccer team opened Mountain West play with a 3-0 loss to No. 12 San Diego State Friday evening at the SDSU Sports Deck.
With the loss, Nevada drops to (4-6-1, 0-1 MW), while San Diego State improves to (10-1-1, 1-0 MW).
The 12th-ranked Aztecs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead over the Wolf Pack, scoring a goal at the 4:34 minute mark by midfielder Tiffany Hurst. San Diego State extended its lead to 2-0 in the 27th minute, as forward Hannah Keane headed in a ball that sailed past Nevada’s senior goalkeeper Dana Moreno. The Wolf Pack offensive attack was kept in check in the opening half, recording its first shot on goal in the last minute before halftime.
Nevada’s offense looked stronger out of the break, opening the second half with a shot on goal by sophomore Marlo Smith that was saved by Aztec goalkeeper Rachel Boaz. San Diego State responded with a goal by Megan Jurado in the 56th minute to take a 3-0 lead. The Aztecs defense kept Nevada scoreless to win the match 3-0.
“We played better in the second half,” head coach Dr. Melissa Price said. “It wasn’t enough to make up the difference of being down two goals. I’m confident we will come out strong Sunday.”
Sunday the Wolf Pack will face its final non-conference opponent, as the team travels to Spokane Wash., to face Gonzaga at 11 a.m. The teams tied their first meeting 1-1 in double overtime during the 2010 season, squaring off at a neutral site in Missoula, Mont.
