Nevada Ties Cal Poly In Overtime 1-1
The University of Nevada soccer team ended Friday night’s overtime match against Cal Poly in a 1-1 tie.
The tie places Nevada (1-1-1, 0-0 MW) on the season, while Cal Poly sits at (2-0-1, 0-0 Big West).
“I’m proud of the adjustments we made after talking at half time,” head coach Dr. Melissa Price said. “It changed the momentum in our favor and allowed us to tie the game.”
Nevada and Cal Poly played the majority of the first half within the midfield. The Mustangs capitalized on a corner kick in the 27th minute, as Kacey Held touched in a cross from Jess Duller for her first goal of the season. Wolf Pack forward Marlo Smith nearly tied the game, knocking in a header that hit the crossbar late in the half. Cal Poly took a 1-0 lead over Nevada into the break.
The Wolf Pack looked determined to get back in the game early in the second period. Nevada had multiple shots on goal, taking an eight to four shots on goal advantage over Cal Poly. Wolf Pack sophomore Chrisalyn Fonte added her second goal on the year with a chip shot past the keeper in the 78th minute. Freshman Lindsey Salcido was credited with the through-ball assist, the first of her career. The two teams ended regulation in a 1-1 tie.
Nevada sought to end the game in the first few minutes of the initial overtime period, scoring a goal that was called back due to a player being flagged offside. Both teams had several opportunities to score in each overtime period. Neither could capitalize, as the game ended 1-1.
Nevada will travel to Davis, Calif. to face the UC Davis Aggies Sunday at 1 p.m. The Aggies won last season’s match 1-0 in Reno and lead the overall series with Nevada 1-5.
