Niagara Blanked by Loyola, 3-0
Box Score
BALTIMORE, Md. – The Niagara women’s soccer team was defeated by the Loyola Greyhounds 3-0 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference matchup at Ridley Athletic Complex on Friday evening.
Facing a 35 minute delay due to inclement weather, both teams were slow to start and set the pace of the game. It was in the 25th minute that Loyola senior Nichole Schiro tallied her first of three goals on the evening on a cross from teammate Jenny Thornton, which proved to be the only mark through the first 45 minutes.
Although Loyola led on the scoreboard, the Purple Eagles (8-8-0; 3-4-0 MAAC) finished the half outshooting the Greyhounds (8-4-4; 4-1-1 MAAC) six to five, and led in shots on goal three to one.
Despite their best efforts in the second half, the Purple Eagles could not contain Schiro, who led all players with eight shots on the evening. In the 66th minute, receiving a pass from Brittany Yancey in stride, Schiro found herself one-on-one with Niagara goaltender Amanda Taylor, finishing the play and extending the Greyhound lead 2-0. Schiro added a third goal in the 86th minute to put the game away, 3-0.
“The score was not a good indicator on how this game went,” said head coach Peter Veltri. “I thought we out played them from start to finish. We just could not find the back of the goal tonight. We hit the cross bar, we missed on breakaways, and we had great chances on corners. Unfortunately, they did what we couldn’t, so they won.”
Sophomore forward Haillie Price led the Purple Eagles in shots with three, while Taylor finished with three saves in the effort.
Niagara returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 21 when they travel to Lawrenceville, NJ to battle M.A.A.C. foe Rider University at 3 p.m.
