NJIT Collects First ASUN Road Win
NASHVILLE, TN – Senior Mamadou Guirassy converted a penalty kick in the seventh minute for the lone goal of the game in NJIT's 1-0 victory at Lipscomb in ASUN Conference men's soccer action Saturday evening.
The Highlanders improve to a 7-2-2 record (2-0 ASUN) while the Bison break even at 5-5 (1-2 ASUN).
"We came out very strong and earned our goal," noted head coach Fernando Barboto about the game. "Thereafter we defended for long periods of the game and did so very well. In the end we met our goal, which was to gain three points and get back to getting a shutout on the road."
Guirassy, the nation's leading scorer, got the Highlanders on the board with his 11th goal of the season, converting a penalty kick in the seventh minute.
The senior forward came close again five minutes later beating two Bison defenders and blasting a shot from outside the 18 that was saved by Lipscomb keeper Christopher Zappia.
Highlander keeper Victor Pujades made six saves, three of them coming in the first half. Pujades made a diving save, stopping Ivan Alvardo's direct kick from 20 yards out in the 30th minute.
At halftime NJIT held a 1-0 lead.
Lipscomb had opportunities in the second half but Pujades made three more saves to secure his sixth shutout of the season.
In the final five minutes, Pujades made a diving save to stop Cameron Botes' header shot to keep the Bison off the board.
Zappia notched three saves in Lipscomb's loss.
NJIT will step aside from ASUN Confernece play and visit Saint Francis U on October 3 in Loretto, PA. Kickoff is slated for 3pm.
