NJIT Drops 4-1 Decision on Road at Loyola
BALTIMORE, MD--Loyola (MD) scored a pair of goals in each half, defeating, visiting NJIT, 4-1, to conclude the non-conference portion of the Highlanders' schedule at Ridley Athletic Complex on Tuesday evening.
Loyola (MD) improves to 6-7 overall on the season and 4-1 at home while the Highlanders move to 5-4-4 overall and conclude the non-conference slate.
"Loyola is a good side," head coach Fernando Barboto added post game. "But us scoring an own goal, conceding a penalty kick and the missing our own penalty kick put us in a tough spot. We created so many chances to score and we were just not clinical enough tonight."
The Greyhounds, two-time defending Patriot League regular season champions took a 2-0 lead at the half. Josh Fawole got the home team on the board in the 30th minute, scoring off a rebound in front of the net, notching his first goal of the season.
Three minutes later, Loyola went ahead 2-0 on a converted penalty kick by leading goal scorer senior midfielder Barry Sharifi. The goal was the fifth of the season for Sharifi.
Midway through the second half, Loyola (MD) extended its lead to 3-0 on an own goal in the 65th minute and scored its fourth tally of the match in the 84th minute off a corner kick by Brian Saramago.
With 34 second remaining in the match, NJIT redshirt junior Rene White scored his team-leading 12th goal of the season assisted by Alejandro Rabell and Andrew Nino.
White, which ranks tied for second in the nation with (12) total goals, raises his career mark to 29. His 63 career points tops the NJIT Division I record book. The 6-foot striker has scored at least one goal in eight of NJIT's 13 matches.
NJIT outshot Loyola (MD) 18-15 paced by Thomas Radon with six shots followed by White with four.
Senior keeper Victor Pujades made his second start of the season, stopping seven Greyhound shots.
A pair of ASUN Conference matches wrap up the Highlanders road schedule for the season, visiting defending ASUN Conference Champions Lipscomb on October 19 and FGCU on October 26. Lipscomb advanced to the Sweet 16, finishing the season with 10 wins.
The final match of the season, Senior Night, will feature the Highlanders hosting Jacksonville on November 2.
