No. 10 Warhawks Battle to Draw with Loras
DUBUQUE, Iowa - Despite a two goal halftime deficit, the No. 10 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team never wavered, battling back to finish with a 2-2 double-overtime tie at Loras College Wednesday evening in Dubuque.
The tie is the first for the Warhawks, 2-0-1, since 2013 when they tied Augustana (Ill.) 1-1 at Fiskum Field in Whitewater. Loras, who received votes in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 preseason poll, is also 2-0-1.
Although the Warhawks fired more quality shots than the Duhawks in the first 45 minutes, Loras was able to capitalize on their opportunities. Brynn Jacobi scored in the 28th and 31st minutes to give Loras a 2-0 lead at the half.
UW-W turned things up a notch in the second half by putting pressure on the Duhawk defense right out of the break. Junior forward Karina Rosales (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) fired a shot on goal in the 48th minute that was saved by Duhawk goalkeeper Kaylee Coble.
Emily Mouille (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) halved the Loras lead in the 75th minute scoring on a combination of passes from Leah Nehila (Round Lake, Ill./Grant Community) and Marie Lesperance(Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South).
Mouille had a potential equalizer sail wide in the 83rd minute but made good on her next opportunity. With less than five minutes in the match, the Warhawks were awarded a penalty kick after a Loras foul. Mouille was elected to take the shot, and she delivered, tying the game just before the end of regulation.
The Warhawks did have one more chance in the final minutes, but a header by Jamie Haertle (Minocqua, Wis./Kettle Moraine, Wis.) was saved by Coble.
Both teams tallied three shots in the first overtime, but none were on goal.
In the final 10 minutes, the Warhawks' sophomore goalkeeper Sara Klimisch (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Indian Trail High School and Academy) made a save to preserve the tie. Klimisch finished the night with two saves.
Head Coach Ryan Quamme was pleased with his team's effort stating, "Loras is a tough place to play and they have a quality team with 13 seniors. Our women showed great heart tonight."
This is the ninth season in a row that these two teams have battled for the Hawk Cup. Because the Warhawk defeated the Duhawks 3-2 last season, the Hawk Cup will remain in their possession for a third straight year.
UW-W will be on the road for their next two games. First up, St. Catherine University on Saturday, September 9 in Minneapolis, Minn. at 1 p.m. Then the Warhawks will travel to Mequon, Wis. to take on Concordia (Wis.) at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, September 13.
