No. 10 Warhawks Open 2016 With Road Win
The No. 10 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team opened the season with a 1-0 win over Capital University Thursday at Bernlohr Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.
The season opener for both teams started quickly.
Carly Pottle (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) led an early charge by the Warhawk offense putting two shots on net 29 seconds apart within the first 90 seconds of the game.
Capital, an NCAA Tournament qualifier last season, responded with a shot on goal three minutes later, but freshman goalkeeper Sara Klimisch (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Indian Trail High School and Academy) was ready for her first test.
The teams went back and forth for the remainder of the first half, but the goalkeeper play was solid for both teams and the score remained 0-0 at the half.
Less than four minutes into the second half, Pottle received the ball off of a corner with her back to the goal. She laid the ball of to Brianna Reid (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) who fired it past the keeper for the Warhawks first goal of the season and a 1-0 lead. Reid, a senior forward, continues to zero in on the school record for career goals, needing just seven more to tie the record.
Klimisch, who Head Coach Ryan Quamme called "outstanding in this game", made multiple key saves down the stretch to preserve the lead and earn her first collegiate win and shutout. She made ten saves in her debut.
This win served as a bit of revenge from the last time these two teams met in 2013. Capital topped UW-Whitewater 1-0 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to end their season.
Coach Quamme and his team will remain in Ohio until their next match on Saturday. UW-W will travel to Springfield, Ohio to take on Wittenberg University at 10 a.m.
