NO. 11 BULLS DRAW NO. 13 OLD DOMINION, 1-1
TAMPA (Oct. 27, 2015)— The USF men’s soccer team wrapped up its home slate with a 1-1 draw against No. 13 Old Dominion, Tuesday night at Corbett Stadium.
The tie kept the No. 11 Bulls undefeated at home for the season as they finished 8-0-2. The men’s and women’s soccer teams both finished undefeated at Corbett Stadium, going 14-0-3 and outscoring opponents 37-8.
Trailing 1-0, the Bulls found the equalizer with eight minutes left on the clock. Lindo Mfeka battled around a few Monarch defenders before crossing the ball into the box. Melvin Becket redirected the ball and found the back of the net to tie the game.
The Monarchs got on the board first in the 29th minute. A shot by Jesse Miralrio from 25 yards out deflected off a USF defender and just skimmed the inside of the post. USF goalkeeper Spasoje Stefanovic made a diving attempt at a save, but couldn’t get a hand on the ball.
USF had the most opportunities in the overtime periods, outshooting Old Dominion 7-1 in the twenty-minute span. Eduardo Maceira almost ended the game in the 91st minute, but his shot went just wide of the goal. Maceira fired off a pair of back-to-back shots late in the first overtime period, but hit the cross bar and sent one wide.
Down 1-0 at the half, USF came out firing on all cylinders in the second 45 minutes. Just seconds in, Gabriel Carlsson went one-on-one with the ODU goalie and fired a shot right into the post. Moments later, Nazeem Bartman and Mfeka took back-to-back shots, Bartman’s hitting the cross bar and Mfeka’s going wide.
For the game, USF outshot Old Dominion 19-5 and held the Monarchs to no shots in the second period and second overtime period. Stefanovic made two saves, while USF forced ODU keeper Alex Tiesenhausen to make five.
The Bulls wrap up the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 31, when they travel to Storrs, Conn. to take on the UConn Huskies in the final conference and regular season match of the year.
