No. 12 Mines Topples No. 4 Hilltoppers
Garnier “Golden” As No. 12 Mines Topples Fourth-Ranked Hilltoppers
AUSTIN, Texas – Freshman Emily Garnier struck the golden goal 45 seconds into overtime and NSCAA No. 12 Colorado School of Mines prevailed 1-0 in its top-25 battle with No. 4 St. Edward's Saturday morning at Lewis-Chen Family Field in Austin, Texas.
After clash of defenses resulted in 13 combined shots and four shots on goal in regulation, Garnier wasted no time delivering the game-winner in the extra session, sending a loose ball off a corner attempt to the far net from 15 yards.
The score was the third straight by a Mines freshman over the last two matches. Garnier joined classmates Haley Cole and Juliet Mullen with her first collegiate tally.
Sophomore Anna Deleray led the Orediggers with a game-high two shots, while Garnier, senior Kendra Bulawa, junior Rachael Turner and sophomoreCari Smith each directed one on frame.
Junior Jayln Yates needed only two saves for her second consecutive shutout and 25th of her career – one shy of tying Briana Schulze (26; 2007-10) for the all-time program lead.
Mines, now 33-1-4 over its previous 38 games dating back to Oct. 5, 2012, is 7-0-2 in the previous nine against teams inside the NSCAA top-25, including 2-0-1 versus the top-five; the women eliminated No. 4 Dallas Baptist, 2-0, and drew with No. 5 UC San Diego, 0-0, in the 2012 NCAA postseason.
With the postponement Friday due to lightning, the Orediggers have a short turnaround, traveling to St. Mary's for a 10 a.m. kick Sunday at Sigma Beta Chi Field in San Antonio
