No. 12 ODU blanks No. 20 New Mexico, 2-0
NORFOLK, Va. -- The 11th-ranked Old Dominion men’s soccer team earned a key victory in Conference USA play on Saturday evening, toppling New Mexico, 2-0, at the ODU Soccer Complex.
ODU (7-1-1, 3-0-1 C-USA) received a goal from senior defender David Macsicza in the first half and then an insurance goal from senior midfielder Ivan Militar in the second half to defeat the Lobos, who have been ranked as high as No. 7 this season.
Macsicza put the Monarchs ahead in the 28th minute, putting away a header inside the six. Militar lofted a cross to the back post, where Michael Nelson headed it back across the box to Macsicza who headed it in for his first goal of the season.
ODU carried the 1-0 into the half, holding the advantage in shots, 6-3, and corner kicks, 4-2, at the break.
Militar then added the insurance goal in the 53rd minute off of an assist from Josue Henriquez. Militar ran onto a through ball and used a brilliant cutback move to beat a defender before slotting a well-placed shot into the lower left corner of the net. The score was Militar’s third of the season.
New Mexico (6-4-1, 0-3-0 C-USA) pushed numbers forward and went on the attack for the remainder of the match, but the Monarch defense held strong to earn the team’s third shutout of the season. The Lobos registered a total of 15 shots in the match, but managed to put just two on target.
In net, ODU goalkeeper Alex Tiesenhausen played the full 90 minutes, tallying two saves.
