The 12th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team saw their 2016 season come to an end in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament with a 2-1 loss to Benedictine (Ill.) at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin on Sunday. The Warhawks wrap-up the season with a record of 14-5-3, concluding their fourth straight season with 14 wins.

The Warhawks, making their third consecutive NCAA appearance, gave up an early goal to the Eagles. Benedictine's Pedro Parra knocked one past Chris Lucatorto (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) from 20 yards out in the fifth minute for a 1-0 BenU lead.

UW-W junior forward, and leading scorer, Dylan Hottsmith (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) put a header on net in the 17th minute, but Antonio Marti-Polo was there to make the save for the Eagles.

A foul in the box in the 25th minute led to a penalty kick for Benedictine, and Nick Kapetanos capitalized, making it 2-0.

The Warhawks applied serious pressure as the half wore on and finally got on the scoreboard in the 41st minute when Owen Thompson (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) fed Hottsmith for his tenth goal of the season and the Warhawks entered halftime trailing 2-1.

With their season on the line, the Warhawks continued to pepper the Eagle goal looking for an equalizer. Shots in the 47th and 54th minutes were thwarted by Marti-Polo and the Warhawks never had another quality shot the rest of the match.

The Warhawks outshot the Eagles 26-12 in the match. These teams met earlier this season on September 7th in Lisle, Illinois with the exact same result.

UW-W finished the season by winning seven of their last eight matches. The Warhawks will say goodbye to five seniors: Justin Stanko (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North), Owen Thompson (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls), Chris Roche (Manchester, England/Sale), Jordan Kayser (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn)and Michael Salm (Grafton, Wis./Grafton).
