No. 14 Columbus State Sinks Buccaneers 3-0
Columbus – No. 14 Columbus State bounced back from a heartbreaking loss Friday night to defeat Barry by a score of 3-0 Sunday afternoon in a non-conference matchup at the Walden Soccer Complex. The win ups the Lady Cougars record to 2-1-1 on the year while BU falls to 1-3 on the season.
CSU came out very aggressive wanting to redeem their result on Friday night and wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Kiana Nicholson had the initial scoring opportunity but her shot hit off the right post. Luckily for the Lady Cougars the ball bounced right to Kelsey Pelleteir who scored her first collegiate goal at the 11:02 mark in the first half.
Minutes later Nicholson almost got her first collegiate goal as she beat two defenders at the top of the 18-yard box but her shot went just high of the net. CSU's next best opportunity to score in the half came in the 28th minute when Christine Kelly's shot went just wide of the net.
Nicholson again nearly had a goal this one coming in the 52nd minute of action. She took a shot inside the box on an open net but a Barry defender kept the visitors within striking distance keeping it a 1-0 match.
Columbus State was able to crack through two minutes later as Stephanie Lowery knocked in her third goal of the season. Emily Husted started the play on the right wing sending the ball in to Nicholson who kept switching the point of attack finding Lowery on left side of the field who was able to beat Barry's goalie for a 2-0 CSU advantage.
The final goal of the game came off the foot of Husted who had a wide open net as the goalie made an initial save off a Nicholson shot.
CSU dominated on the stat sheet once again as they doubled the shot output of Barry 18-9 and also held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Nicholson finished the game for Columbus State with three assists while Husted also had three points with a goal and an assist.
Mary Mancin improved to 2-1-1 on the year making four saves as she picked up her second shutout of the season. Becca Rogers suffered the loss for Barry falling to 1-3 as she allowed three goals while making four saves.
Columbus State returns to action on Wednesday, September 14 when they travel to Livingston, Alabama to take on West Alabama. Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. at Tiger Stadium as the two sides will meet for the first time.
