No. 16 Santa Clara Wins At Cal Poly 3-0
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - In the third game of the seasonSanta Clara (3-0-0) defeated Cal Poly (2-2-0) by a score of 3-0. Julie Johnston scored two goals making it the third time in three games a Bronco player has scored two goals. Ellie Rice scored two goals atSan JoseState in the season-opener and Lauren Matheson scored two goals at UC Santa Barbara.
Johnston, the reigning WCC Freshman of the Year, scored in the 13th minute to putSanta Claraahead 1-0. Sarah Jackson took a shot that was saved by Cal Poly goalie Brooke Gauvin but Johnston got the rebound and scored her first goal of the season.
The Broncos were on the attack in the first half as they outshot the Mustangs 12-1.
The second half started on a high note forSanta Clara. In the 53rd minute Sarah Jackson took a ball from Jenny LaPonte and deposited it in the back of the net to put the Broncos up 2-0.
Seven minutes later, in the 60th minute, Julie Johnston scored her second goal of the match on an assist from Lauren Matheson.Johnstongot the ball and beat the goalie one-on-one from 15 yards out to make the score 3-0 in favor ofSanta Clara.
The game ended 3-0 withSanta Claraoutshooting Cal Poly 20-3.Santa Claraalso had nine shots on goal to Cal Poly's two.
The Broncos next match will be against No. 17 UC Irvine (4-0-0) on Fri., Sept. 9 at 5 p.m. as part of the Stanford-Nike Invitational. The game will be played atStanfordUniversity's Cagan Stadium.
