No. 16 WVU Wins Seventh Straight Match

AMES, Iowa. – Junior forward Frances Silva scored a pair of second-half goals to lead No. 16 West Virginia past Iowa State, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at Cyclone Sports Complex. The Mountaineers, who extend their winning streak to seven matches, move to 5-0-0 in Big 12 Conference play.

After Iowa State scored a goal in the first 73 seconds, WVU answered with a score from forward Kelsie Maloney in the 28^th minute. Maloney finished a shot on the left side of the box on a cross from forward Kate Schwindel.

West Virginia increased its lead with goals from Silva in the 57^th and 70^th minutes, with Schwindel picking up assists on both scores. The three-assist day is the second of Schwindel’s career, equaling her three-helper day against Towson earlier this season.

Silva’s two goals give her 10 on the season to lead the Mountaineers.

The Cyclones rallied to make it a 3-2 match in the 85^th minute on a goal from their leading scorer Jennifer Dominguez.

WVU goalkeeper Sara Keane came up with a big save in the 80^th minute, making a full extension save on a long blast from Kaeli Flaska. Keane finished with three saves, while ISU goalkeeper Maddie Jobe make nine saves on the afternoon.

The Mountaineers held a 21-13 shot advantage, including tying a season-high 13 shots on-goal.

WVU improves to 9-3-3 overall, while Iowa State dips to 9-7-0.
