No. 17 JMU Men Lose 2-1 at VC
RICHMOND, Va., Oct. 12, 2011 — Virginia Commonwealth topped 17th-ranked James Madison 2-1 in Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer at Sports Backers Stadium Wednesday night, ending the Dukes’ winning streak at six games.
VCU improved its overall record to 8-5-0 and is now 3-2-0 in CAA competition. JMU’s record stands at 8-2-1 overall and 4-1-0 in league play.
The Dukes remain in first place in the CAA standings but are now tied with Old Dominion, which also has a 4-1-0 league record after beating William and Mary 3-0 Wednesday night.
All of the game’s scoring came in the final 27 minutes, as the Rams took a 2-0 lead before Dukes’ senior Patrick Innes (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) scored an unassisted goal in the 80th minute.
VCU’s Nate Shiffman scored on a 22-yard shot in the 64th minute, then Jason Johnson’s header off a rebound off the crossbar in the 77th minute increased the Rams’ lead to 2-0.
VCU held a 16-12 advantage on shots, and VCU goalie Josh Pantazelos made three saves. Dukes’ redshirt senior goalkeeper Justin Epperson (Herndon, Va./Oakton) made one save.
