NO. 18 DAYTON STUNS UIW IN DOUBLE OVERTIME
DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton men's soccer battled for 107 minutes before senior Andres Acevedo’s double overtime goal gave the Flyers a 3-2 win over Incarnate Word Friday night.
Wet conditions at Baujan made it difficult for either team to gather any momentum offensively. Dayton goalkeeper Chris Froschauer did a good job of controlling the slippery attempts on goal by UIW.
Neither team was able to put the ball in the back of the net as the Flyers and Cardinals went into the locker rooms at half time with a 0-0 tie.
Dayton had three shots on goal and six total while UIW had just one shot on goal in seven attempts.
The second half started with the visiting Cardinals pushing the tempo early on. UIW seemed to have control of the game until the Flyers earned a corner kick at the 54 minute mark. Senior Abe Keller drove in a curling cross to the penalty spot where sophomore Christopher Lenning beat his man to the spot and headed the cross into the back of the net. With that, the Flyers took a 1-0 lead over the Cardinals.
The goal was Lenning's first of the year while the assist was Keller's sixth of the season.
It wasn't long though before UIW evened the score with a header goal of their own in the 65th minute. Dayton was once again in a battle with the Cardinals with just 25 minutes to play in the contest.
UIW managed to pull ahead of Dayton just a few minutes later on a missed assignment defensively. The Cardinals led the Flyers 2-1 heading into the late stages of the game.
Dayton was looking for something to shift the momentum back in their favor. They got just that in the 81st minute when a cross into the UIW box was headed around a few times before falling to junior Greg Enstone, who headed in the tying goal for UD. Sophomore Maik Schoonderwoerd recorded the assist on the play.
With the score deadlocked at 2-2 and just minutes left on the game clock, both teams settled in defensively.
After 90 minutes of play, the score remained deadlocked, resulting in a sudden death overtime period.
The first overtime period was a battle in the trenches as shots on goal were hard to come by. Neither team made a dent in the score as second overtime approached.
In the last 10 minutes of action, Dayton was fighting with every ounce of energy not to give up the deciding goal to a constant Incarnate Word assault.
With just three minutes left before the contest would end in a tie, a counterattack moved the ball to junior Amass Amankona in space in the middle of the field. Acevedo made a perfectly timed run to the left of Amankona, who picked him out precisely. The senior forward from Rego Park, New York controlled the ball, set up his shot, and delivered on the game-winning goal for Dayton.
With his first goal of the season, Acevedo maintained Dayton’s undefeated streak, sealing the best start in school history.
Lenning, Enstone, and Acevedo provided the goals for the Flyers, who took advantage of their few opportunities on the night. Keller, Schoonderwoerd, and Amankona contributed the assists.
As a team, Dayton totaled nine shots on goal in 18 attempts. UIW shot 22 times with six on target. Froschauer recorded four saves in the game as well.
The Flyers (10-0-0) will open up Atlantic 10 play on Oct. 11 against George Washington at 7 p.m.
