No. 19 Warhawks Open Season with Home Win
The No. 10 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team opened up their 2016 campaign with a 2-0 win over the University of Minnesota-Morris Friday night at Fiskum Field in Whitewater. The Cougars, who opened their season last night, drop to 0-2.
UW-W wasted little time in scoring their first goal of the new season. Senior Michael Salm (Grafton, Wis./Grafton)sent a cross towards Derick Achombom (Widikum, Bamenda, Cameroon/Government Bilingual High) six minutes into the game. Achombom headed it in the direction of Taylor Ortiz (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) who put it in the back of the net for a 1-0 Warhawk lead.
Six minutes later UW-W extended their lead to 2-0 in a similar fashion. The sequence started with a Salm throw-in, followed by a flick-on by Achombom, but this time it was Dylan Hottsmith (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) who slid the ball past the keeper.
Head Coach Tony Guinn cited the play of Achombom noting, "I thought he played a great game, and with the two assists, he was one of our best players tonight."
Junior goalkeeper Chris Lucatorto (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) made three saves in the first half as the Warhawks carried their 2-0 lead into the intermission.
Salm, who sat out last season with an injury, almost made it 3-0 just three minutes into the second half, but his shot was stopped by the Cougar keeper.
UW-W continued to pepper the Minnesota-Morris goal with shots, but they were unable to extend their lead.
A third goal was not needed as the Warhawk defense and Lucatorto held on to the shutout. Lucatorto totaled four saves in the game. Coach Guinn said of Lucatorto's play, "It was a great start to his junior year. Earning a shutout is something we pride ourselves in."
Twenty-six players saw action for the Warhawks who outshot their opponent 23-7.
UW-W has a quick turnaround as they will host No. 20 Macalester on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Fiskum Field.
