No. 19 Warhawks Outlasted at Benedictine
In windy and warm conditions, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team lost to Benedictine (Ill.) 2-1 Wednesday at The BenU Sports Complex in Lisle, Illinois. The No. 19 Warhawks are now 1-1-1 while the Eagles improve to 2-1.
With winds coming out of the southwest at 16 miles per hour and temperatures in the upper 80's, the teams battled hard for the first 45 minutes. A number of quality shots by both teams were saved by the opponents' goalkeeper.
Warhawk goalie Chris Lucatorto (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) made three first half saves while the Benedictine keeper kept four Warhawk shots out of the goal.
After 45 minutes, the game remained scoreless.
The Warhawks started the second half with some physical play. UW-W was whistled for four fouls in the first five minutes of the second half. The fourth foul resulted in a penalty kick for BenU, and they capitalized for a 1-0 lead.
Just minutes later Justin Stanko (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) took a free kick for the Warhawks and as he sent it towards the net, Dylan Hottsmith (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) found a way to knock it in and tie the game. The goal is Hottsmith's second of the year and the assist is Stanko's first of 2016.
Benedictine forward, Nick Kapetanos, who scored the teams' first goal, broke free in the 61st minute and slid one past Lucatorto to give the Eagles a 2-1 advantage.
Isaac Monson (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) had the best opportunity at an equalizer in the 66th minute, but his shot was stopped and the Warhawks were unable to complete a comeback.
UW-W outshot BenU 19-9 in the game but was whistled for 18 fouls to their ten.
The Warhawks have a seven day break before they return to play. UW-W will host Luther College on September 14 at Fiskum Field in Whitewater. The match is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.
