No. 2 Fort Lewis survives Colorado Christian 3-1

October 3, 2011

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — No. 2 Fort Lewis (10-0-0 overall, 6-0-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) survived an early scare to defeat Colorado Christian (0-10-1, 0-6-0) today at the CCU Soccer Field.

The last place Cougars did something no other team had done through the first nine games of the 2011 season: take a lead against Fort Lewis. Luke Burgard scored an unassisted goal just 41 seconds into the game to give CCU a 1-0 lead.

The advantage was short-lived, though. Fabian Kling tied the score at 17:28 when he scored his fourth goal of the year off an assist by Artur Piperkov.

Jordan Alexander scored the eventual game-winner at 22:33 off a Thomas Hoang pass. The two would connect late in the game to add insurance, as Alexander netted his team-high sixth marker of the season off of Hoang’s Skyhawk-leading tenth assist of the year.

Fort Lewis dominated play, outshooting the Cougars 32-2 overall and 11-2 in shots on goal.

David Ilgenfritz made eight saves for CCU, while Ryan Wirth stopped one shot for FLC.

Fort Lewis hits the road again next weekend when it travels to the Front Range for games at No. 17 Metro State (7-2-1, 5-2-1) at 3:30 p.m. Friday and at UC-Colorado Springs (5-5-0, 3-3-0) at noon next Sunday.

The meeting between the Skyhawks and Roadrunners is the first of two between the rivals this season. Fort Lewis previously defeated UC-Colorado Springs in a physical 1-0 affair at Dirks Field on Sept. 25.
