No. 2 UCSD Battles to 0-0 Draw in Season Opener
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Neither No. 2 UC San Diego or Western Washington could find the back of the net on the Tritons' first day of women's soccer action on Thursday evening at Orca Field. UCSD and WWU went home scoreless, 0-0.
The Tritons out-shot the Vikings, 21-8, striking eight shots on-frame compared to just a single shot on target from WWU. UCSD dictated the pace of play throughout the evening, forcing WWU to commit 25 fouls.
Freshman Cassie Callahan registered six shots in her Triton debut while Hayley Johnson, Sarah McTigue, Anne Wethe and Rachel Leslie got off three shots apiece.
UCSD had most of the good opportunities in the first and second half. Johnson put a corner directly on goal in the 15th minute after a series of corner kicks, forcing WWU goalkeeper Jamie Arthurs to push the shot off the far post.
Callahan had a pair of good chances in the second half. She forced Arthurs to tip one shot over the bar five minutes into the second half and then rocketed an attempt off the bar with seven minutes left in regulation.
UCSD faces No. 10 Seattle Pacific on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. in Interbay Stadium. The Tritons took down the Falcons the last time the teams played, 1-0, in the NCAA Sweet 16 on November 19, 2010.
