No. 20 Armstrong blanks Patriot Women
SAVANNAH, GA – Francis Marion University senior forward Kelly Anthony finished with two shots, but 20th-ranked Armstrong University tallied two goals in the first seven minutes of play and went on to claim an 8-0 Peach Belt Conference win over the Patriots, Wednesday night (Sept. 21) in women's soccer action.
FMU (0-7-0, 0-2-0) will host eighth-ranked University of North Georgia on Saturday, Sept. 24, at 4:30 p.m. It will be McLeod Children's Hospital Family Day at Hartzler Field.
Armstrong State's Asa Thorsen scored in the sixth minute to give the Pirates an early 1-0 lead. Ashley Lewis would double the lead with her marker in the seventh minute of action. The Pirates led 7-0 at halftime.
Freshman goalkeeper Micahla Kitchen made five saves in the first half of play for the Patriots. The start was Kitchen's first in a Patriots’ uniform.
In the second stanza, Anthony would give the Patriots a chance to get onto the scoreboard with a shot that would be saved in the 54th minute. Nine minutes later, Anthony found herself with another chance for the Patriots. Her shot in the 63rd minute would be saved once again.
FMU junior goalkeeper Casey Murakami registered six saves in 62 minutes of action.
Three Armstrong goalkeepers combined to record the shutout for the Pirates. Erica Laurens played the first 45 minutes before exiting the game. Laurens would earn her fifth win of the season without facing a shot. Michelle Watson and Mallary Hedden would both see time in goal for the Pirates in the second half. Hedden recorded two saves, while Watson didn't face any shots in net.
Armstrong (5-1-0, 2-0-0) outshot Francis Marion 28-3 and led 8-2 in corner kicks. The Pirates were whistled for 16 fouls, while the Patriots were called for three.
