No. 21 SDSU Falls at No. 14 Michigan, 3-1
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – No. 21 San Diego State had its 13-game road unbeaten streak stopped as it found itself on the wrong end of a 3-1 score at No. 14 Michigan Sunday afternoon. The Aztecs fall to 1-2-1 with the loss and 11-1-2 in their last 14 road games. The Wolverines, meanwhile, improve to 4-0.
SDSU wasted little time in putting the scoreboard operator to work after Hannah Keane played a ball to Carli Johnson, who dribbled to the middle and blasted a shot from 25 yards out into the upper part of the net. The goal at 1:58 was the defender’s first of the season with Keane recording her second helper of 2013.
Not three minutes later, Michigan answered with a header at the goal line from Christina Ordonez to lock the score at 1-1. The Aztecs, however, responded by controlling the pace and outshooting the Wolverines, 3-1, over the next 20 minutes. But in the ensuing five minutes, Michigan attempted three shots, the last of which got past San Diego State goalkeeper Melanie Vaughn and was credited to Madisson Lewis.
Looking at a 2-1 deficit, the Aztecs were unable to generate clean looks in the second half as evidenced by their one shot (Keane) in the first 30 minutes. Jensen Skinner put an end to the streak with a shot in the 77th minute, but her blast went wide. In between SDSU shot attempts was Michigan’s third goal of the day, coming in the 65th minute (Nkem Ezurike).
As the game was nearing an end, San Diego State had an 83-second stretch in the 84th minute where it went Keane shot (blocked), Haley Locker shot (blocked) and Keane shot (saved). Unfortunately the Aztecs were unable to cut their deficit and were ultimately handed their second loss of the campaign.
Keane ended the day with a game-high-tying five shots and two shots on goal. Vaughn, meanwhile, led all players with four saves.
San Diego State returns home and will play only one game this week, a Sunday (Sept. 8) afternoon tilt vs. Houston. Game time is noon at SDSU Sports Deck and admission is free.
