No. 22 FDU Picks up Fourth Clean Sheet
TEANECK, N.J. -- On a hot and muggy Wednesday night at University Stadium, the No. 22-ranked Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team defeated in-state rival NJIT, 1-0. With the victory, the Knights improve to 4-0-0 on the season, while the Highlanders fall to 1-3-1 overall.
The home team controlled the match all night long with the exception of a late surge by NJIT late in the contest. FDU outshot the Highlanders, 20-3, and senior goalkeeper Jacob Lissek made a great save off a free kick to prevent a tie in the 84th minute.
The Knights, who held an 11-2 advantage in shots over the first 45 minutes of action, scored the lone goal of the match in the 29th minute when sophomore Tchamy Dantse Dantse found the back of the net in traffic after a corner kick. The goal was the second of the season for the current Northeast Conference and Big Apple Soccer Player of the Week.
In the second half, FDU kept the pressure on the NJIT defense but could not score. The Knights had a golden opportunity to extend their lead to 2-0, but sophomore Simon Doherty's attempt after he beat the goalkeeper in the box was saved by a Highlanders' defender in the 57th minute.
During a stretch from the 80th minute to the 85th minute, NJIT used an offensive surge, but as they have in the early part of the season, the Knights' defense buckled down and was able to pick up their fourth clean sheet in as many contests.
Lissek made three saves in goal for FDU, who also held a commanding 12-3 advantage in corner kicks.
"It's good to get another victory and to keep another clean sheet," Head Coach Seth Roland said. "We could have done a better job of finishing our chances, and that would have made life a little easier for us. I am proud of the fact we defended well and got our fourth straight shutout."
The Knights will hit the road for the first of four consecutive matches away from University Stadium when they travel to Albany, N.Y. to take on Albany this Sunday, Sept. 15 at 6 p.m.
