No. 25 Buffs Trip Up Mines On Opening Night, 1-0
CANYON, Texas – Colorado School of Mines men's soccer held NSCAA No. 25 West Texas A&M on the ropes Friday at the Pitch in Canyon, Texas, but failed to find the equalizer as the Orediggers dropped their first season-opener since 2006, 1-0.
The Buffaloes (1-0), who ranked 19th nationally in scoring offense (2.38 gpg) in 2013, put across the go-ahead score in the 69th minute as Michael Williamsset up Christopher Hutton for the game-winner.
Aided by a 6-1 shot advantage and five corner tries over the final 19:39, Mines (0-1) finished the relatively balanced play with a slight advantage in shots (14-12), shots on goal (5-4) and corners (9-6).
Junior Joe Haines had a game-high six shots and two shots on goal in shots, while classmates Ryan Leach and Richard Garvey and sophomore Vince Koch each landed one on frame.
Sophomore Collin Hall (0-1) was credited with the loss in net, denying two shots in 90:00 minutes.
Mines remains away from home next week, meeting 2014 MIAA preseason runner-up Northeastern State at 6 p.m. on Sept. 12 and Oklahoma Christian at 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 14.
